From Grapes to Wine…A Sales Analogy by Brian Gottlieb Used with permission
A few days ago, I was doing some research for one of my clients. As you know, I really try and do my homework on any industry I work with. So, I am now becoming a wine expert! I was amazed at the love, care, and attention given to each grape before it turns to wine...and then I started thinking. Wine Facts: Did you know that it takes no less than 21 steps to turn a green grape into a glass of white wine? Were you aware that a red grape must be picked at a certain time of day? What if I were to tell you that the mixing of wine is called a "must"?
When making wine, the term "must" is used as a term for the squeezed grape solution prior to entering the fermentation vat. What a very interesting term... "must". For a professional salesperson, how many "musts" are there?
Let's start with the preparation, for it all stems (weak pun) from there. There is no doubt that the lead is sacred. In regards to the "must", the sales professional must honor; cherish, and as often as possible, convert a lead to a sale... that is if they want to remain a sales professional. Just like the grapes, your prospect has a unique ripening process; one does not simply smash a bunch of grapes, stick them in a bottle, and then...poof! Wine! There are 21 steps to making a fine glass of wine. What do you suppose the wine would taste like if one of those steps were skipped? I believe the same holds true for the sales process. However, as busy people, we sometimes try to be efficient with our prospect rather than being effective. The Silverstone sales model is a very intuitive and effective approach. Each step has been carefully created and battle tested in some of the most rigorous conditions. Just like making a fine bottle of wine, missing a step in the sales process can spoil the desired results. So, if you are making home made wine, or getting ready to go out on a sales call, focus on being effective... and know that some things just take time.
Action Plan: Examine the daily interactions you have with your prospect, while staying focused on effectiveness. As George Bernard Shaw said, "The greatest problem with communication is the illusion it has been accomplished.” June SalesLogix User Group Date: Wednesday, June 27th Who

Maybe it’s a good thing computer programs don’t always work the way they should. If they did, then thousands of tech support representatives would be out of a job. Now while your favorite techie no doubt appreciates your call, there are a few things you can try on your own when you are experiencing problems with SalesLogix.
One of the simplest things you can do is close the program and open it again. Another option is to restart your computer, especially if your computer has been on for several days in a row. After awhile the programs you’re using eat up more and more memory. Restarting the computer or program frees up the memory, which in turn might solve quite a few problems.
Note if there are any other programs running when the error occurs; there might be conflicts in memory usage or file sharing. For instance, you can’t do a mail merge if Microsoft Word is open. Try closing unnecessary programs.
Get a little help from your friends. See if one of your co-workers is having the same problem on his or her machine. If possible, get on a co-worker’s computer and see if you can replicate it there. This will help tech support determine if the problem is with your computer, the local network, the server, or if you’re not doing something correctly.
If you are using a laptop make sure you are aware of how much power is left in your battery. If your computer dies while running SalesLogix you might experience problems when you are able to power it up again.
Check permissions. There is a reason everyone in the office isn’t allowed to delete accounts or access certain files. If you can’t see a SalesLogix record, it may need to be released to you by the administrator.
Be very careful when uninstalling programs that use shared files. Some of these files may be necessary for other programs to function properly. Unless you are sure the file is not needed, it is usually best to leave shared files alone. As a general rule of thumb when dealing with SalesLogix, files related to Microsoft Office, the Windows operating system, and .NET should not be removed.
Oh yes, and don’t forget the SalesLogix help file (F1).
Still need to contact tech support? Here are some things you can do to help the person trying to help you.
Take notes. An important part of trouble shooting is knowing what was done to make the error appear. Sometimes missing a single step might not cause the error to be reproduced; in some cases, it may cause a different error to appear.
Send screen shots. Tech support people love getting screen shots. Especially when they’re in Word documents (it reduces the size and download time). Press the Print Screen (sometimes abbreviated PrtScr) button to capture a screen shot of the desktop. Alternatively, press ALT+Print Screen to capture the active window. Then paste it into the program of your choosing (preferably Word).
Be aware of which version of SalesLogix and Office you are using. Your version of Word, Excel, or Outlook might not be supported on your version of SalesLogix. If this is the case, you will need to talk to your IT department about upgrading.

Windows Tips and Tricks Simple Maintenance for PCs
Here are a few simple things you can do to keep your computer running smoothly. These steps require running software that is included with Windows or is commonly available for download on the internet.
Tip #1: Run your anti-spyware program Spyware and adware are programs installed on your computer without your consent, usually after browsing the internet. Most spyware is programmed to keep track of what types of websites you visit. This information in turn is sent to companies that will use this information to send you junk mail and advertisements. The programs themselves are small in size, but when a few dozen pile up on your computer they can start to slow things down. Some computer experts recommend you use two programs, since program B might find spyware that program A missed. It is a good idea to scan your computer once a week.
Tip #2: Virus scan Few things are more frustrating than having all your important data destroyed because of a virus created by a fourteen year old hacker. You can avoid many viruses by keeping your anti-virus program up to date and scanning attachments or downloaded internet files. Still, every now and then one might slip through the cracks. Some viruses will set themselves up on your hard drive and take up memory, resulting in slow performance. If a spyware scan doesn’t fix your issue try a virus scan.
Tip #3: Disk clean up Over time your computer will tend to store some unnecessary files. The most common of these types of files are web pages you visit. Some types of programs create temporary files during installation. Also, you may have files that you haven’t used in a while but can’t delete. All these files take up space on your hard drive. Use the Disk Cleanup utility (found under Programs/Accessories/System Tools) to remove these unneeded files. You can also use this program to compress the size of old files. That way, they’re still there but aren’t using as much space.
Tip #4: Disk Defragmenter Another useful program under System Tools is Disk Defragmenter. As you add and subtract information from your computer, bits of a file might end up in different locations on the hard drive. If this happens, it can take longer to run a program or open a file because the computer has to gather all these bits of information from different places on the hard drive. Disk Defragmenter addresses this by moving the file fragments closer together.
Tip #5: Error checking Sometimes areas of data storage on your computer can get damaged or corrupted, resulting in errors and system crashes. You can use the error checking utility to attempt to fix these problems. Double click on My Computer then right click on the C drive. Select properties then go to the Tools tab. Click the Check Now button and check the two boxes. When you reboot your computer the program will start running. Be aware you will not be able to use your computer while the program is running. The process can take 20-30 minutes, so plan accordingly.
Contact Support Not sure if you should re-cut your database or re-format your hard drive? Here is how to contact tech support:
